Meet the Pros
Doug Westcott - Director of Golf
Doug joined Desert Highlands as Director of Golf in 2004. He has been a PGA Class A member since 1999 and is very involved in the local SWSPGA chapter where he has been a member of many committees as well as the 2001 and 2002 Tournament Chairman of the Arizona Open. In 2016, Doug was the recipient of the Southwest PGA’s Bill Strausbaugh Award, presented to PGA Members for distinguished efforts in mentoring other PGA Professionals and supporting them in both employment and community service.
Doug began golfing at age 7 and became an accomplished junior golfer, competing in numerous AJGA events. Young Doug was individual state champion and two time team champion. He attended Purdue University and was a member of the University’s Golf Team from 1988 to 1992. Prior to joining Desert Highlands, Doug served as Head Professional at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale.
Matt Housden - First Assistant Golf Professional
Matt arrived at Desert Highlands in October of 2011. A native of Spokane, Washington, he learned to play golf at the age of twelve and caught the golf bug immediately. He went on to letter in golf three of his four years in high school before attending the University of Idaho where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Marketing and his PGA of America certification.
Prior to Desert Highlands, Matt was an Assistant Golf Professional at the Club at Cordillera where he also ran the First Tee junior golf program. Matt still enjoys showing his support for junior golf and has participated in the 100 holes of golf marathon supporting the JGAA since 2012. Matt has also interned at the Colorado Golf Club, Bear Creek Country Club, Bully Pulpit, and Jug Mountain Ranch. Outside of golf Matt enjoys camping, fishing, and playing basketball.
Derek Shelburne - First Assistant Golf Professional
Derek joined the Desert Highlands team in 2013. Derek is a native of Michigan where he attended the Professional Golf Management Program at Ferris State University. There, he received a Bachelor’s Degree in business marketing as well as his Class A PGA Membership. During school, he played for the Men’s Golf Team and furthered his career in the golf business with internships at Kalamazoo Country Club in Kalamazoo, MI, Brae Burn Country Club in New York, as well as Indian Hill Club in Chicago.
Upon completion of school Derek moved to Toledo, OH where he worked at Toledo Country Club and then Inverness Club. Following his Director of Golf from Inverness to help start up a Golf Performance Center, Derek was able to grow his career in teaching by focusing on the development of all levels of golfers at The Golf Performance Institute of Toledo in Maumee, OH. During the winters Derek would travel to Arizona where he worked at Rio Verde Country Club, which led him to becoming a full time resident when becoming a member the Desert Highlands family. Outside of golf, Derek enjoys spending time with his son, traveling, and watching sporting events.
